TIPS FOR HURRICANE PREPARATION Follow these tips to stay safe and have what you need. Close curtains/blinds to reduce the danger of flying glass if windows are broken. Put food and other hurricane supplies in waterproof bags or containers. Turn off outside gas cylinders and disconnect pipes. Park vehicles inside the garage or away from trees. Secure and brace external doors. Brace an inward-swinging door by wedging a chair with the back against the door knob. Be ready to evacuate to a shelter if your home is damaged or you are told to by emergency personnel. Use your telephone for emergencies only. Stay tuned to local media for official notices. If the wind gets inside, closed doors will help stop it from entering other rooms. Do not go outside while the eye of the storm (an area of calm weather at the centre of the storm) is passing, unless absolutely necessary. Depending on the size of the eye and the speed at which the hurricane is travelling, the calm weather can last for up to half an hour or more but winds will return unexpectedly from the opposite direction, sometimes with greater force. The majority of injuries during a hurricane are cuts and blows caused by flying glass, trees or other debris. If your roof begins to fail, go to an inner room (preferably one without windows), a cupboard or passageway or empty bathtub and shield yourself with a mattress. Have supplies of water and ready-to-eat, non-perishable foods (dried or canned meats, vegetables and fruit). Get a manual can opener, paper plates, cups and disposable utensils. Remember personal hygiene items — toilet paper, feminine supplies, soap, detergent. Have a change of clothing, extra shoes and rain gear. Blankets or sleeping bags (one for each family member). Special needs items (baby supplies, eyeglasses/contact lenses, at least one week supply of prescriptive medications). Cash. Organise important financial paperwork in waterproof containers. First-aid supplies. All tips from the Emergency Measures Organisation, emobermuda
