TMC to fight TMC in steel poll ABHIJEET CHATTERJEE Durgapur, July 11: Two Trinamul trade unions are contesting against each other in an election to pick the “bargaining union” at a central public sector unit in Durgapur, defying the party’s one factory-one union policy. While one of the Trinamul-backed unions at Alloy Steels Plant, a SAIL undertaking, is headed by Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, the other is led by INTTUC Burdwan unit chief Prabhat Chatterjee, known to be close to INTTUC state president Dola Sen. Four unions are contesting the July 30 poll to pick the union that will negotiate with the management. Chattopadhyay formed the Alloy Steels Employees’ Association in 1999. The Mishra Ishpat Workers’ Union was set up by Chatterjee in 2012. This is the first time in 45 years that union elections will be held at Alloy Steels Plant. Ashok Kundu, the working president of Alloy Steels Employees’ Association, said: “We are the original Trinamul trade union. Our organisation was formed much before.” INTTUC Burdwan unit chief Chatterjee said he had urged the two factions to unite, but to no avail. Dola declined comment on “such petty issues”.
