TO GOD BE THE GLORY There must be some measure of jitter within the camps of other gubernatorial aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State as more and more groups rout for Hon. Nimi Walson-Jack. By the day, Walson-Jack, a frontline aspirant and with huge prospects to pick the party’s ticket, continues to attract popular attention as his support base swells with more groups rallying behind him. The latest of such groups are the Rivers State Chapter of the PDP National Grassroots Vanguard, Youth for Today & Future group, Rivers Renaissance Assembly, Great Dream Achievers for Progress Group, Organisation for Socio-Democratic Transformation in Africa, Creative Gentlemen of South-South Forum and the Voters Association of Nigeria. The groups were jointly received at the Rivers Converge Secretariat in Port Harcourt when they paid a solidarity visit to Hon. Walson-Jack. In their separate addresses, they pledged their readiness to work with the aspirant who is a former State Legal Adviser of the defunct National Republican Convention, NRC, towards the actualisation of his gubernatorial aspiration. Speaking on behalf of the National Grassroots Vanguard, an organisation affiliated to the Directorate of Youths Affairs of the PDP, Hon. Sokari George, its Rivers State Coordinator, informed the governorship aspirant that as a foremost grassroots crusader in the PDP, the group was primarily committed to propagating the ideals of the party, the re-election of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the emergence of Hon. Walson-Jack as PDP flag-bearer in the 2015 governorship election. They contended that in Rivers State, no person or ethnic group was born to be hewers of wood and drawers of water. They averred that they were fully convinced that Hon. Walson-Jack has “the zeal to lead and nurture Rivers State Government to greatness.” Another of the groups, ‘Youth For Today & Future Group’, a socio-political organisation in Rivers State, in its address read by Comrade Amaechi Daniel, an official, said that in its meeting of July 5, 2015 the group had acknowledged Hon. Walson-Jack as the most preferred aspirant out of the lot jostling for the top office in Rivers State given his track records, experience and mature disposition to politics and governance. Comrade Amaechi said the group had chosen Hon. Walson-Jack “to save our people from empty political promises, longtime marginalisation and neglect of the youth in Rivers State”. The group thereafter resolved to support his aspiration by mobilising the people and residents of the state to ensure his victory at the polls. Hon. Walson-Jack thanked the 7 groups for the visit and informed them that his bid was borne out of the need to provide quality leadership for the state. He noted that the recurring political crises have impacted negatively on both its economic interests and the wellbeing of its people and residents. According to Hon. Walson-Jack, his primary motivation remains to reverse the trend by uniting the people and residents of the state and embarking on aggressive economic reforms that would enhance their fortunes. Hon. Walson-Jack called on the groups to remain steadfast in their support for President Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR, based on his remarkable performance and the fact that he is constitutionally entitled to a second term in office.
