TODAY’S BIBLE READING July 10, 2013 ECCLESIASTES CHAPTERS 1 -6 CHAPTER 1 V1 -11 speaks about that all is vanity Note( v1) Prov. 1: 1, (v2) Ps. 39: 5-6, 63 : 9, 144: 4, Rom. 8: 20, 21, (v4) Ps. 104: 5, 119: 90 (v5) Ps. 19: 4-6 (v6) John 3: 8, (v7) Ps. 104: 8,9, v12 – 18 speaks of the fruits of wisdom. (v16) 1 King 3: 22, (v17) 1 Thess. 5: 21, v1 – preacher means: one who addresses an assembly (12: 9). In the context it is Solomon. (v2 – demonstrates that vanity is the key word of the book or (theme). Many have translated vanity as “futility”, meaninglessness, emptiness, breath, nothingness, absurdity and so on. The word vanity means that which is futile, or worthless, of no value or profit. The word vanity must not be taken to mean everything in the universe for the following reasons: 1, the author’s observations are clearly limited to what is “under the sun” or observable. 2. The negative conclusions always grow out of observable phenomena as the expressions “I saw” “I have see” “Again I saw and so on. 3. Vanity is you’re predicted of God, God’s work, God’s revelation, or man as man. 4. Speaks realities are commended by Solomon in –such a way as not to be considered vanity e.g. the fear of God, enjoyment of life, and proper use of wisdom. V4 -11 the amazing thing in this verses is that the earth Goeth on but man, the height of God’s creation passes into eternity with no remembrance (v11) v12 – 18 – vexation of Spirit (v14) occurs seven times in the book and it contains the idea of fruitfulness or futility. Several passages in the book emphasize wisdom’s limitation where as proverbs emphasizes wisdom’s benefits.
