***TOUR OF PEMBROKESHIRE SET TO BREAK ITS RECORD THIS APRIL*** Lashing rain and strong winds with gusts of 60 m.p.h. did not deter forty or so cyclists from attending the 2015 Tour of Pembrokeshire Prologue Ride on Friday 9th January. Starting and finishing at Llys Meddyg in Newport, riders followed the gruelling top half of the main event’s 100 mile route which passes through the spectacular Ceibwr Bay, the picturesque village of Moylegrove, the ancient abbey at St Dogmaels, Boncath where the Inn is one of the feed-stations, Bwlch y Gwynt, the highest point in Pembrokeshire, along the peaceful Gwaun Valley which precedes a 25% climb up the mountain above Newport and completes almost 5000 ft. of climbing. “Conditions climbing Bwlch y Gwynt were so violent, you were doing track-stands on occasions” said Mike Field of Narberth Dynamos, “I was pleased to get back to Llys Meddyg for a hot shower and lunch.” The event was sponsored by one of the Tour’s main sponsors Bianchi Bicycles, who loaned riders fabulous Bianchi Infinitos. Brooks England provided riders with their high performance Cambium saddles, Mavic UK and Pembrokeshire Bikes provided mechanical support and well known South Wales sports photographer Huw Fairclough captured the toughness of the event with some great pictures. Quite a number of riders stayed in Newport and enjoyed a walk on the coast path the following day. Maudie Hughes, Chief Executive of Pembrokeshire Tourism said how much of an asset events like the Tour of Pembrokeshire are to the County: “Events which are bringing more visitors into the County are undoubtedly a great boost to the tourism economy. Whilst visitors are enjoying Pembrokeshire they will be paying for accommodation, food and, possibly, days out either side of the event too. If each visitor taking part in the Tour of Pembrokeshire spends just £50, it will generate at least £25,000 for the local economy.” The annual Tour of Pembrokeshire sportive which is linked with the Tour of Brittany attracts riders from all over the UK, Western Europe and Ireland. The event’s organiser Peter Walker said “we hold The Tour in the shoulder season to support the tourist industry, we go to great lengths to keep the feel ‘local’ by sourcing almost all of the food within Pembrokeshire, involving the communities and donating to local charities. The ride has done a lot to establish Pembrokeshire as a great place for short break cycling holidays. It was a major feature twice, in two national magazines last year and riders love the un-commercialised feel and community involvement we’ve generated.” Over one thousand one hundred individuals have already signed up for The Tour which takes place on Saturday 25th April 2015.
