TOWN TAKE THE SPOILS IN THE NEXT GEN CUP A fantastic two days at Ferndale Park ended yesterday with Jason Vanderheijden’s Arklow Town FC boys securing the first silverware of the new season by clinching the Next Gen Cup. The weekend tournament, which was organised by our good friends and close neighbours at Arklow United FC, saw last season’s Town U-10 squad play some cracking football on Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Ardmore Rovers FC, a 2-2 draw with Wicklow Rovers AFC and a 4-2 win against Gorey Celtic. These fantastic results earned the boys a place in the semi-final on Sunday where they beat Courtown Hibs to reach the final. This game proved to be a very close encounter against the host team, Arklow United FC, with two goals from Niall Dempsey leaving the game at stalemate at the end of normal time. In extra time, Ben Somers got the winner for The Town although United nearly equalised only for Pauric Bermingham to pull off a fantastic save in the dying moments. The boys received a fantastic cup in what was a very well run and organised event. The weekend tournament was also tinged with a note of sadness however for this bunch of talented young players with Team Manager, Jason Vanderheijden, announcing that he is stepping down from the position after three years in charge. Commenting after the game, Jason said that his wish was always to leave with some silverware and this was accomplished at the Next Gen Tournament. He said that he had a wonderful three years with the boys and found the parents very supportive throughout that period. Jason will be replaced by Dave Hingerty who assumes the role for the new season. Well done Jason Vanderheijden and the U-10 boys who put on some brilliant team performances over the weekend.
