TREAT YOUR SUBORDINATES RIGHT, ANOTHER NAME FOR LIFE IS CHANGE! Humility in power is nobility. Restraint in authority is strength. Decorum in speech is the hallmark of good character and consideration of ones inferior is the benchmark of responsibility. One vital lesson I want us to learn this day is to always treat our subordinates fairly and with respect because life is nothing but a swinging pendulum! As it looms forward, it equally looms backwards. Let me tell you a short story. A certain harsh General manager in a government establishment situate in a state in the Eastern part of Nigeria raised funds from the running grant to change the furniture and official cabinets in his office and his next-in-command, the Director approached him to please release the former furniture and cabinets to him to replace the very old dilapidated ones in his office but he refused vehemently. He threatened him with a query for disrespecting him so much to have the temerity to ask him for the replaced furnitures and cabinets. The Director left his presence downcast and unhappy. Just a month down the line, there was a change in government and the General manager was compulsorily but prematurely retired and the Director was appointed General manager to take over from him! Now, the subordinate who was deprived of the old furniture is in charge as the boss to use the new furniture bought by his Ex-boss whereas his boss is now a pensioner whose pension could not be processed without his former subordinates approval. He lacked the courage to approach him for assistance due to the unsavoury professional relationship between them. He could not believe it that the same office where he once held sway is the same place where he had to fill forms to enter! No one owns the world, all we own is time and season! Be nice to those you meet on your way up, because you will meet with them on your way down! Life is transient, how much more power? Never allow positions get into your head- like the name posits, its a position and position often positions the posited per time and whoever is positioned occupies the position! If you must offend anyone, please do not offend the young ones and your subordinates as they hardly forget! No matter how tall a man is, he cannot see tomorrow! The next place after the top is the ground! The child is the father of the man! The junior staff is a senior staff at infancy; no one is little forever! Take heed! -Tosin Ayo, (The word bank).
