TROOP G NEWS RELEASE April 5, 2014 Pedestrian Killed in Bossier Parish On April 4, 2014, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a crash on Interstate 20 at mile post 33 in Haughton that claimed the life of a Haughton man. The preliminary investigation revealed that 27-year-old Kevin McCarl of Haughton, for unknown reasons, fell from the LA 157 overpass onto I 20 eastbound travel lanes. A vehicle approaching McCarl observed him in the roadway and was able to avoid hitting him. A 1996 Jeep driven by 54-year-old Gwendolyn Baker of Monroe was following behind the vehicle that avoided McCarl. Baker applied her brakes but was unable to avoid hitting McCarl. McCarl was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bossier Parish Coroner’s Office. Baker was not injured and was wearing her seatbelt. Toxicology samples were obtained from McCarl as well as Baker and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Walking upon the travel lanes of a highway, especially at night is dangerous and should be avoided. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear light colored clothing, reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night. Additional pedestrian safety information may be found online at walkinginfo.org.
