“Tackling domestic abuse key to keeping people safe” – Police Scotland Chief Constable Sir Stephen House said tackling domestic abuse in a consistent way across the country is key to Police Scotland’s priority of keeping people safe. The Chief Constable today (Tuesday 13 August) attended the launch of ‘Our Glass House’, an interactive Edinburgh Festival theatre event that highlights issues attached to domestic abuse. Set in an empty house in Wester Hailes, the audience is invited to walk round the rooms of the house, listening to the experiences of actors relaying experiences of abuse. Chief Constable Sir Stephen House said: “The issues around domestic abuse are complex and can affect anyone, no matter where they live or work. Experiences such as this are useful for those working to tackle this problem in providing a lifelike learning environment for the issues faced daily. “The impact of abuse not only on the individual but also on wider society is significant and as our policing priority is keeping people safe, tackling domestic abuse is a key focus. People who carry out domestic abuse need to hear from me – that it is something we take very seriously and where we find evidence of crime we will act decisively. “We want to build public confidence to encourage more people to come forward and report abuse. A single policing service allows us to ensure a consistency of approach and make specialist resource and expertise available across the country. By creating Domestic Abuse Co-ordination Units across the country, we can ensure that resource is available to all.” Shona Robison, Minister with responsibility for Equalities, said: “The Scottish Government is delighted to be supporting the Our Glass House production at this year’s Fringe Festival. Domestic abuse is never acceptable, but it continues to happen behind the closed doors of our family, friends and neighbours. “This unique production will help to raise awareness by taking us behind those closed doors to see and to hear the stories of those who have suffered abuse. “The Scottish Government is clear that domestic abuse has no place in a modern 21st century Scotland, and we continue to work closely with our partners across the public and third sectors to tackle it.”
