Taken by one of our Master Gardeners, this video shows the transformation of the monarch larvae (caterpillar) into a chrysalis. Prior to this, the larvae was hatched from an egg laid on milkweed, growing rapidly for about a week, until about 2 long. It then attached itself to the branch, hanging upside-down, motionless for about 24 hours, before forming a j for another 24 hours or so. Watch as it sheds its outer skin casing, wiggling and pushing until the casing falls off. The chrysalis is soft & green, and will become harder over the next few hours. It will hang motionless for 9-10 days before emerging as a butterfly.
