Target Breach Reflects Need for New Cybersecurity Models Wall Street Journal (01/10/14) Rosenbush, Steve Cybersecurity expert and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner Ted Schlein says that organizations need to adopt a new approach to how they protect their systems from cyberattackers. Over the last decade, Schlein noted that he has been advocating for the security industry to move beyond the concept of the moat, or keeping intruders out by using anti-virus software and other security technologies. He notes that any moat can be overcome because such defenses have a fundamental weakness - they can only protect against the types of attack vectors they are designed to look for. This makes these technologies vulnerable to new and unexpected threats, Schlein says. Instead, Schlein recommends taking an inside-out approach to security by building it into software from the beginning instead of adding it as a application around the network.
