Taxi drivers in Malaysia in recent years have a pretty bad - TopicsExpress

Taxi drivers in Malaysia in recent years have a pretty bad reputation of being rude, refusing to use the meter and sometimes, even dangerous. Using taxis almost all the time, I have had my fair share of those encounters. Last week, I flagged down a taxi from the side of the road and as I got on to it, I saw that the taxi meter was covered by a piece of cloth, and the taxi driver did not say much as he manoeuvred his way around to my destination. I was feel a little bit stressed, wondering what the price was going to turn out to be at the end of my journey, but did not want to ask as I was afraid to anger the taxi driver as I was alone. At the end of the ride, I was really surprised to find that the taxi fare was metered the way it should be. I gave him a RM10 note for the RM 6 ride, and he did not have change. I expected him, like most taxi drivers, to ask me to go and change it somewhere and get somewhat annoyed. He didnt. He asked me for however much coins I had, which only amounted to RM 1 something. He refused my RM 10 note, and even appologized profusely to me. He wished me a good day. Thank you, Mr Taxi driver. This was a side of Malaysia that I have always wanted to believe in, and although my hopes have been crushed so many times, it lives again through encounters like this.
