Tee Ken : Today the Hong Kong students are head over heel overwhelmed by this term. Many of them said: “We want it! We can’t live without it! If we don’t achieve ‘the freedom’ we desired, we will occupy the streets here, there, and everywhere!” Wow! What a threat! Democracy includes the freedom to threat?! All the Hong Kong striking students should ask themselves, “What is democracy?” By fact, Hong Kong is a region on the southern coast of China. Technically speaking, Hong Kong citizens are citizens of People’s Republic of China. Democracy can be one man’s paradise while another man’s nightmare. Let’s illustrate a scenario to make a comparison. For example, population wise comparing United States to China, a family of three in the States versus a family of ten in China to reach a simple agreement as to where to dine for dinner. All members of the family have equal rights to cast a vote. Obviously, a family of three can soon reach a meeting point, how about that family of ten? McDonald? Burger King? Pizza Hut? Chinese seafood restaurant? Korean barbecue? Sushi maybe? Who’s happy and who’s not? Fair or unfair? Anyone still have the appetite for dinner after all? Democracy ≠ democracy
