Before I bought the Televue 35mm Panoptic I mostly observed planets. After just one night in my light polluted suburban back yard with a 35 Panoptic I became a deep sky enthusiast, and this became my favorite eyepiece.Eye relief with the 35 Panoptic is very comfortable, even if you observe with eyeglasses, as I do.With a true field of 1.6* in my 10f6 premium dobsonian I could sweep the sky quickly, and I found deep sky objects more easily than ever before. The 68 degree wide field of view was far more immersive than the 50* field of a plossl. At 50* you are looking at a field of stars. At 68* you feel you are in the field of stars.Stars appeared as brilliant pinpoints from edge to edge. Although the eyepiece reveals no false color, even at the edge, even on the limb of the Moon, I could see colorful stars almost everywhere I looked. Fire engine red, pumpkin orange, lemon yellow, cool blue and pure white.Because I could also see tiny little stars and fainter deep sky objects than I had ever seen in any other eyepiece, my other 2 eyepieces never left my eyepiece case. In fact, every night I observed, the 35 Pan was the first eyepiece to go into my focuser. On most nights it spent more time in the focuser than all my other eyepieces combined. Its that good.I have used the 35 Panoptic in newtonians and apochromatic refractors between f4.7 and f7. Except for the f4.7 newtonian, which showed coma in the outer part of the field, which could be corrected with a Paracorr, the eyepiece performed spectacularly well in every telescope. This eyepiece is by no means cheap, but nor is it as crazy expensive as other wide field eyepieces. Your investment in the 35 Panoptic will pay generous dividends in pleasure for many years to come. The only real drawback of this eyepiece is that at 1.6 pounds (0.7kg) it will throw some telescopes off balance. But if your telescope can handle the weight, if your telescope accepts 2 inch eyepieces, if you are looking for a telescope eyepiece of about 35mm, I give the 35 Panoptic my enthusiastic recommendation.I bought my 35mm Panoptic from a vendor at the Oregon Star Party in 2000. This is possibly the best purchase Ive ever made. Stars remain as pinpoints out to the absolute edge of the ridiculous field of view. When you center a deep sky object in this eyepiece and are using averted vision, you will rarely notice the edge of the field. Plossls often distracted me this way. It was a constant reminder Im looking through a telescope. This eyepiece makes for a magical feeling of a window to space.I use a 9mm Nagler for planetary work but this eyepiece is the gem. I would encourage you to try a Lumicon OIII filter in conjunction under a truely dark sky. I use this combination when I want to remind myself why I chose this hobby. The only drawback (if youd call it that) is that its a fairly heavy lens. If you have a 10 dob or so and are looking parallel to the horizon, make sure its a well balanced system or it can be enough to make the telescope droop down. More info at bit.ly/1iGosQA.
