Telecom Namibia services disrupted by cable thefts Telecom Namibia says theft of fibre optic and copper cables in the Windhoek area has resulted in the disruption of services since the beginning of the year. During the early hours of 6 January, cable thieves cut and stole 1,200 pair, 400 pair, 300 pair and 100 pair main cables in a manhole in Wanaheda. Residential and business customers in Ombili as well as the northern part of Wanaheda are affected. On 12 January thieves cut and carried away 800 pair, 300 pair and 200 pair main cables in Claudius Kandovazu Street. A fibre cable was also cut and stolen during the same incident. Customers in the suburbs of Golgota, Dolam and part of Soweto have been affected. On 14 January an optical cable and copper cables were cut and stolen near the Sam Nujoma Stadium. No services were affected as another link from Wanaheda to the Telecom Namibia equipment room in the Northern Industrial Area is up and running. An overhead copper cable was cut and stolen near Plot 32 in the Brakwater area on the same day, affecting customers in the area. On most of the occasions thieves broke into Telecom Namibias underground infrastructure access to cut and remove cables feeding street distribution cabinets in the respective areas. The incidents have been reported to the police who have launched investigations. (telecompaper)
