Boutsadakham (KPL) The Government has announced that the planned salary increase for government employees would be suspended amid this fiscal year’s budget constraints even though the prices for water supply, electricity, and goods are continuing to increase. The Head of the Budget Department, Mr Bounluea Sinsayvolavong said that the Lao government would not adjust the salaries for state employees and that they will remain at the current level for now. The government suggested that salaries should remain at the current level of 6,700 kip per salary index. Mr Bounluea said that the current salary level is high enough when compared to the 2012-2013 fiscal year which increased pay from 3,500 to 6,700 kip per index. A Prime Ministerial Decree previously claimed that the salary index for state officials would increase from 6,700 kip to 9,300 kip this fiscal year. “However,” according to Mr Bounluea, “the Government also recognizes that the salary for government employees is not sufficient when taking into account the current high cost of living which continues to increase.” The Government is now coordinating with the Vientiane Mayor to draft the adjusted budget plan and find the solutions to increase the salary for civil servants next fiscal year.
