Tertiary Students all around PNG, take note of the amendments on tertiary institutions ACTS the Parliament is about to make in the next Parliament sitting. I understand that the only threat to the government is the Students POWER and this amendment of Act may remove the Students POWER from strikes. If any Students reading my post, you make your own research about it and make your comments or opinions about what you think and how it would affect our universities in the country. A piece of legislation to review the University Act will go before Parliament next month and if passed will give the Office of Higher Education control over the running of universities and other tertiary institutions. The legislation will also see the Office of Higher Education become a department, giving them more authority over the financial aspects of tertiary institutions. This could also mean regulation of the school fee structure set by universities and tertiary Institutions. The Act will also mean the new department will be able to intervene directly into university and tertiary student matters like arrests, strikes and boycotts. Minister for Higher Education Science and Technology Delilah Gore says the National Executive Council has approved the submission that will be tabled in Parliament. “At the moment the universities are independent so the funds go straight to the institutions. If passed, then we will sort of manage the funding that goes down to the universities. No one is managing those funds straight from the treasury to those universities. “When the office becomes a department then control of the institutions will take place,” says Gore. Currently there is no regulation over school fees charged by each institution seeing some vary with huge fee differences compared to others. by: Joe N Kaowai
