Testing the waters, Westport! Im working towards the creation of a Westport (or Adirondack) Community Childrens Chorus for kids 8 to 18 from Westport and beyond. I have tremendous support from colleagues and friends so that kids in our communities can come together in song. Wouldnt it be a glorious thing to come hear a vibrant group of local kids singing and dancing together in their colorful WCCC T-shirts at a place like Ballard Park in the spring?!! Im working on finding financial resources to secure a rehearsal space in town right now. My goal is to have 45 kids together from Westport and the surrounding communities for the first season: three rehearsals a month (based on the school schedule), January through May (probably on Sunday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 or evenings from 6:00-7:30 during ski season) with a performance in June. The Catholic Church in town is a very promising resource for rehearsals, but the cost of insurance for our use is a little tricky. It may or may not be a significant concern- well be working that out in the coming weeks. We have many tremendous assets in musical professionals in the community and well beyond who truly want to contribute. The focus will be on having as many kids as possible sing high quality music in a wide array of styles with piano, percussion and a variety of instrumental support from our friends.
