Thank you Siyar Manuraj for this comment: Once Upon A Time In An Ocean (2014) the the latest documentary of Rupesh kumar is a heroic attempt to analyze socio political dynamics of post renaissance kerala with its subtle caste nuances under the explicit background of sea ,sea shore, coastal people and their relentless struggle against the sea for their very survival and establishing their individual and collective psyche . The documentary with its penetrating close up shots of the sea,the boat and the boat men with scintillating sound of the sea gives the viewers the real experience of fishing in boat. The documentary naturally portrays the working life of fishermen . The very beginning of the documentary with the words of Vargese ,the srank or captain of the ship and one of his men is highly insightful,motivating and symbolizes the essence of the politics the documentary puts forward ,we need courage ,braveness and above all deep knowledge of the sea is needed not only to tame and exploit the sea but also to go ahead in our life. The documentary reiterates the need of political unity of all depressed and under privileged people in kerala . They need courage and braveness to shackle the barriers of casteism . To do this they must have a perfect knowledge of history. In short with utmost honesty I tell you that this documentary is beautiful aesthetically and politically with sharp edged propositions . Well done Rupesh and his crew members. Congratulations and big salute to all those worked behind it to make it a reality. I really wished to have a typical fisherman song in it.
