Thank you for sharing, Elizabeth. This is certainly sad, however, from the Pharmacy side of it, there may be an even sadder story told by this redesign... many small and independent stores (of which there are few remaining, thanks to the increasing amount of corporate contracts between big federal, state, and private insurance companies and big pharmacies forcing patients to go to places like Wal Mart, etc., and Medicaid/Medicare audit fines) are now under pressure to keep up. Design, store layout, and technology are strictly regulated. For example, under threat of a fine, my family had to change an old vintage sign for our 150+ years-old independent pharmacy because it said Browns Prescription Pharmacy, instead of its full, legally documented name, Browns Prescription Pharmacy of Deposit, Inc. Similar reasons dictate interior redesigns as well, as legal demands strictly prescribe how a pharmacy should be laid out, often under threat of a fine. As the author says, This store had something once that made it incredibly special, something that money couldn’t buy. Now, there’s not a single thing that differentiates it from the hundreds of similar drug stores throughout the city. I guess that is the 21st century. Keeping the old charm, unfortunately, is hardly an option in the 21st century.
