Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1944, Davis became a nationally prominent counterculture activist and radical in the 1960s, as a leader of the Communist Party USA. She had close relations with the Black Panther Party and was involved in the Civil Rights Movement. She was twice a candidate for Vice President on the Communist Party USA ticket during the 1980s. She had previously traveled as a visiting academic and political thinker in socialist countries in the 1970s. Her research interests are in feminism, African-American studies, Marxism and the philosophy and history of punishment and prisons.
