The 100 year old ash in our neighbors back yard is infested with the green ash borer and is in process of dying as are the ashes throughout America. Indianas tree population is comprised of 15% ash trees. To lose this old friend is a major loss for our back yard-- and losing this species is a major loss for America. Evidently, green ash borers were imported by way of skids (pallets) from another part of the world, probably Asia. As Maples (30% of Indianas trees), and white oaks are also under attack from similar non-native infestations, one wonders just what is good to plant to replace our dying species. Fall planting time is here, the best time to plant, and we must do some research to benefit our troubled environment.
