The 2013 Hurricane season officially ends today, becoming the least active season of this century so far according to the US-based National Weather Channel. The breakdown shows that this was the sixth least active season since 1950 with 13 Named Storms, 2 Hurricanes, and none of the storms formed reached Category 3 to 5 strength. Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center stated before the season began, that there would be 13 to 20 named storms, with 7 to 11 of them becoming hurricanes and with three to six of those developing into major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or beyond. This was then slightly adjusted in August, as it was forecast that there would be 13 to 19 storms, with six to nine of them becoming hurricanes, and three to five of those major hurricanes. As the season went on the predictions fell well short, as after September 19, the remainder of the season brought only four more tropical storms, one of which was Karen.
