The 2014 Oregon IAAF World Junior Championships have come to a conclusion in Eugene, with Australias team returning home with a silver and bronze medal. While Australians didn’t dominate the medal count, the Championships did demonstrate that the future of Australian athletics is bright. WA Pole Vaulter Nina Kennedy (Year 12) can count herself in that group, finishing fourth in the most competitive womans pole vault event ever held at a World Junior Championship. For the first time ever the final four women all jumped over 4.35m, with Russian Alena Lutkovskaya claiming a new championship record of 4.50m. Kennedy ended her campaign with a jump of 4.40m, equalling the current Australian Junior and Youth record of 4.40m, held by training partners and sister duo, Liz and Vicky Parnov. I felt great out there. All the factors came together and they worked in my favour. I did the best I can and in the end I didnt medal, but I got 4.40m and two PBs, I am so, so happy. said Kennedy.
