The AASW has supported a member’s complaint to the Australian Communications and Media Authority about stigma directed toward people with mental illness. The incident occurred on Television. The member has a strong case and we have supported him with a submission. We can’t release details yet, but will keep you informed about the result. There is substantial evidence to explain the negative impact that stigma has on people who experience mental illness. Stigma refers to unwanted and inaccurate stereotyping to demean and undermine certain people (NMHC 2012: 151). It is extremely harmful to the wellbeing and recovery of people with a mental illness (Corbiere et al, 2012: 1). Across all health settings it is clear that stigma causes harm and offence to people with mental illness (Thornicroft & Rose 2013: 2). People with mental illness face discrimination in many areas including employment, health care, legislative processes and housing. People with serious mental illness face a 15 year lower life expectancy, increased financial stress and social exclusion. (NMHC 2012: 91; Thornicroft & Rose 2013: 3)
