The Archdiocese of Lipa in Batangas dismissed on October 27 reports that the 434-year-old church in Balayan is being leased for commercial purposes. Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said it is not true that a portion of the Immaculate Conception church, a national historical landmark and cultural treasure in Balayan, will be rented out for commercial purposes. Arguelles’ statement was released at the height of an issue that has become viral in the Internet, reaching as far as the Vatican. A petition titled “Archdiocese of Lipa: Don’t betray history. Save centuries-old Balayan Church school and convent from destruction” and posted on social media website, “change.org,” has collected 6,095 signatories as of 3 p.m. October 27. The online petition supposedly by The Lopez of Balayan, Batangas Foundation, Inc., claims that “the Archdiocese has started talks to have the adjoining 18th century structure leased to a national grocery chain.”
