The Bahama Journal - McCartney: DNA Not In Shambles By Kyle Walkine Journal Staff Writer Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader Branville McCartney dismissed claims that his party is in shambles after their chairman resigned on Monday. Mark Humes, who is now the president of the Union of Tertiary Educators of The Bahamas (UTEB), stepped down from the post of chairman in the DNA to take care of “other business”. Mr. McCartney, who spoke with The Bahama Journal yesterday, hit back at the critics who say that the DNA is now falling apart. “I’ve heard these rumors when we were campaigning in the last election,” he said. “We have more issues to consider than whether or not I’m leaving the DNA or if it’s in shambles. That’s a bunch of foolishness. We’re just getting started.” “Those who say that we’re in shambles; they need to look into their own parties. You had a major party that went into the elections without a deputy leader and now that same party has a leader and a deputy that’s publicly disagreeing on certain fundamental issues.” “You have a government that has a difficulty governing this country and you talk about the DNA being in shambles? My God man.” “The DNA is not a one man band. If Branville McCartney is not a part of the DNA, the party continues. The chairman has stepped down and we thank Mr. Humes graciously for everything he’s done.” The DNA leader said the relationship between the party and Mr. Humes will remain great and he’s sure that Mr. Humes’ work with the DNA is not done. “We certainly wish Mr. Humes well,” he said. “I think he’s a brilliant young man and I don’t think his job is complete with the DNA. He’s only stepped down as chairman.” In his press statement Mr. Humes said, “After months of careful consideration, prayers, and reflection, I called a special meeting with the executive team of the DNA to inform them of my decision to step down as chairman of the party.” “It is with profound sadness and at the same time a profound respect for the officers and members of the party that I have chaired and worked to help establish and a profound respect for the Bahamian people at large, my family and friends, old and new, included; that I now publically resign my post.” Mr. McCartney said he somewhat expected the resignation of Mr. Humes since he won leadership of UTEB. But he believes Mr. Humes will do extremely well in his new position. As for the post of chairman, the party leader said the post will eventually be filled. He added that there is a convention committee assigned to plan the party’s convention, which he said should be sometime this year.
