The Basilica of Sacré Coeur (Sacred Heart) stands atop the highest mount on the North side of the City of Paris. It was built after the fall of Napoléon III, then the revolt that led to the Commune, with an extraordinary loss of life, when the government sent in army troops to wipe out all resistance. The experience was a shock to the public conscience.
