Venue: The Military Museum, Kalemegdan. “The catastrophe that enveloped Serbia during the First World War was met with a groundswell of sympathy and an unprecedented relief effort by its allies. For the first time, such an effort was directed, organised and funded, not primarily by governments, but by ordinary citizens. At the forefront were women and men from Great Britain and its Dominions, including Australia and Canada. Deeply moved by the reports of the suffering, they flocked to Serbia in the early months of the war to attempt to alleviate it. “ (from the exhibition catalogue)
