The Femme-morial. first there was the making of the flyer and posters and programs. the transportation of performers, crew, and audience from sf to a secret place nestled in the oakland hills. the altar, lighting, tech and sound. food. bar. the sound guy from beach blanket babylon wondered how many were coming cuz they sure were slow showing up. i said yeah dont worry. performers got into face, sound checked, finn the go-fer ran for ice, programs, coffee and anything else we needed last minute. and indeed pals showed up. the woo team called in the woo. the story of mom and homobiles, then heklina in a carnaby street circa 67 mini dress and 6 inch platforms, grace towers brought everyone to tears with an unplugged cover of halo, lil miss hot mess did bette at the baths doing for free, bebe sweetbriar sang some billie holiday in an amazing blue sparkly gown, dulce de leche did some bessie smith style blues in a super shiny 20s get up, then justin vivan bond sang with matt ray on piano, told the story of how she and mom met at eichelbergers and ruled that place until the wee hours. vivian got two glasses of wine on ice and put one on the altar for mom. she sang dietrichs falling in love again. when she got to the part about men gather round me like moths around the flame...a moth came in and flew around the stage. for the whole song.... hi mom. she loved that song. she had taken me to see the blue angel in the theater when i was a kid and that movie was a big influence on her when she was little. and she loved her some justin vivian. then honey mahogany wrapped it up with her fabulosity and..curtain call. we got posters if you want a souvenir. it was a star studded heartfelt send off for mom, a ringing in of nonprofit status, and an unforgettable evening with our beloveds. we have lost many, but we have chosen family. thank you for the magic, skills, and love.
