The Manhattan Project began modestly in 1939, but grew to employ - TopicsExpress

The Manhattan Project began modestly in 1939, but grew to employ more than 130,000 people and cost nearly US$2 billion to develope the first Fusion and Fission Nuclear Bombs. In upstate New York, not far from Niagara Falls, one of the main sites used in the first experiment to crate a nuclear reaction resulted in the eventual building of a containment dumb that is 10 acres large. The U S ARMY Corp of Engineers is responsible for the site and the proposed clean up which has been delayed for about 60 years. Recent reports released today via local Buffalo News channels show that a study of the site by the US ARMY has shown that residual leakage of radiation from the capsual may be from the bottom of the containment vessel which was buried using 1940s technology. Recent eart quakes over the last half century may have broken the bottom of the cement structure and is now leaking low level radiation. The concern is that the top of the vessel will be breached in the event of a natural disaster and that a radon leak would make the surrounding area radioactive. Given the large area and deep pile of this nuclear waste and radioative material, the danger zone could stretch as far as Toranto Canada and as far south as northwestern Pennsylvania. If it breaks, the only warning of deadly radiation would be detectors in the area and those of private prepers who are monitoring this situation. Local community groups that attended a meeting with officials about the new report stated that they felt the Army and US Government was dragging their feet in doing something to prevent an accident that could potentially kill millions in the surrounding area if the vessel breaks. The radiation level in the area is only about 7 rads per hour close to the site inside the restricted area but if the leak expanded it could be as high as 30 rads per hour for about 60 miles around the facility. This would be comperable to a direct nuke attack on Buffalo which could potentially kill millions or expose them to harmful radiation which could cause cancers and other health problems resulting in death. The only protection in the event of such a breech would be a US Military Spec Gas Mask and NBC suit and filter and leaving the area as soon as possible. Due to the large amount of waste which includes the original pile of nuclear reactor use for the first tests of the reactor the methods of removing the waster and soil in the area could take years to complete and the site is marked as one of the top sites for clean up of toxic radioactive waste in the US. For more on this story see the links below and if I were in this area, which I am, I would buy a NBC supply of NBC filters and gas masks along with NBC suits and containemt preps for bugout should this leakage spread. The site is now about 70 years old so it is not looking like the US Government is in a rush to take on this disaster waiting to happen. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project westvalleyfactsofwny.org/ niagara-gazette/local/x1566988236/New-data-from-Army-Corps-contradicts-earlier-assertions-about-LOOW-site
