The Munsifs of Ālur. Following poem from popular lore(చాటు పద్యం), probably belongs to Early Medieval Times (1300 - 1500 AD), describes the Velama Landlords of the villages east of Ongole. They were certainly Adi Velamas and there are two families that belonged there – Papinenis and Immanenis – sharing the same Gotram. Papinenis were principal landlords and Munsifs while Immanenis were Village Accountants (Karanams). For those of you who is not very conversant with old Telugu, I am transliterating and translating the poem. The poem will give a flavor of the lifestyle enjoyed by our Adi Velama ancestors.
