The Muslim Brotherhood experience has shown us that Islamists have no political incentive for joining the democratic process, as it is merely used as a tool to force them into a corner and delegitimize them by forcing them to soften their religious stance on various political issues. This is not an anti-democracy statement, it is a fact and it is not a new phenomenon. In the early 1990s, the West backed the Algerian military in its campaign to crush the Islamists who were winning free and fair elections. More recently, the Palestinian resistance group Hamas joined the political process and won free and fair elections, but were subsequently plotted against by the rival Fatah party and Israel, and the result is almost total international isolation and the current illegal siege on Gaza. Finally, we have this latest farce where the US, EU and others are completely turning a blind eye to what is happening in Egypt. The West only supports democracy when it suits them and their definition and vision for what a particular Muslim majority state should be like. Democracy would be a beautiful thing indeed if it could actually be implemented
