The Natural Norse Universe, Runes, and Runecasting. The Norse Tradition has a structured view of reality that is different than what is considered normal today (Weschcke & Slate, 2012). Yggdrasil is the Word Tree and contains nine planes which are separated into three levels. The World Tree is very similar to the Kabbalisitc Tree of Life. They both provide a medium for humans to begin to grasp the meanings and the manifest destiny of forces that exist in a more subtle perceptive view and that are conceptually beyond normalcy in what Norse Tradition will assert as the true powers in the universe (Weschcke & Slate, 2012). The three levels of Yggdrasil are Asgard, Musspelheim, and Midgard. These form very similar planes that resemble Heaven, Hell, and Earth. The Rainbow Bridge was built by the Aesir in order for traffic to flow to Midgard each day to intermingle and assist in the lives of humans (Weschcke & Slate, 2012). At Ragnarok, The Frost Giants will course across the bridge and destroy it. The great wells of the World Tree will become polluted and cause its roots to rot. The serpent Nidhog that has gnawed at its root for all time will now eat through it and to kill it. Its leaves go yellow and The Norns will cry out. During this time, the balance in the world that has come about by way of the Norse gods and their management of demons and giants falls prey to the chaos and irrationality that exists in the universe in opposition to their order and peace. In Ragnarok, the dark forces of evil assemble and attack the Norse gods. All the gods succumb to a death in battle during Ragnorak but so too do the forces of darkness. The World Tree is cast into flames by the dark elves. Seven sons of the Aesir will escape from Ragnarok on the mysterious ship called Skidbladnir. It will be these sons of the Aesir that will reform the world from the ashes of the old one and permit an age of harmony to usher forth. The runes may keys to such an entrance of harmony and peace into the world (Weschcke & Slate, 2012). It was Odin’s incredible foresight, wisdom, and sacrifice that allowed for the runes to be discovered. The universal forces and archetypes of existence are represented in the runes and allow are used in divination procedures. They show the destiny of a moment in time and they also allow for alteration of the future by exposing the alchemically charged challenge and opposition that one would need to be overcome to achieve an end. The Runes contain supernatural personification of energies and intelligences that exist in the universe just beyond the veil of the “normative” human comprehension. The Norse Tradition, with all of its connectivity by way of the Runes has many gods and goddesses which also express the forces of the universe. The same Nordic worldview also allows for what humans have come to “know” as “lesser beings.” Natural spirits, Dwarves, and Elves are among these inhabitants of The Lesser Being population as well as water spirits and kobolds, Valkyries, Huldru-folk, serpents, giants and giantesses, and more. Understanding the characterizations of the universal forces and intelligences found in Rune Wisdom also begets the individual a look at their own soul-personality-psyche link. There is a Fetch or a Fylgia character that is associated with development of this connection. The “familiar” as it is called in other practice paradigm acts as an extension of the person and can be developed to actually take independent actions. This and many more strange understandings form a part of the interactive guide to galactic travel and soul-psyche integration found in the omnipotent runes. The Runes must be closely studied by a shaman or other caster who would delve into their manifestation and power. The Runes’ powers come from their representations of universal powers and forces (Weschcke & Slate, 2012). For example, the symbol Othala in the Germanic or Odal in Norse is about ancestral and fundamental properties of familial existence, value, heritage, and inheritance. The magical power associated with it is the ability to call upon the Ancestors to provide a channel through the runes into the individual which allow them to gain powers of protection, prosperity, strengths and talents, and to protect the health of the elderly, in particular. The runes are cast in a way that is not dissimilar to Tarot and I Ching card interplay with the Divine. This is a serious undertaking, not at all fun and games. The processes in the past that humans have become aware of have caused a din and a rue of stigma and dogma suggesting the entire premise of a dimensional bridge as ridiculous. But, it is not ridiculous at all, but quite substantively real in fact. It is necessary to understand a culture to truly understand its artifacts and runes are within that categorical view. The entire premise lends to and borrows from the geometrical understanding of the heavens and earth and that numerology exposes. The order and arrangement of the Runes, just like numbers in numerology, have different meanings intended and relayed. This is also true across time, for example, whereas when the culture had an X trait, the Y Rune meant one thing, but now, if the culture has a Z trait, then the Y rune has a different meaning. The preparation for a reading of Runes also requires an altered state of mind…one that is difficult to conjure for most, although innate for others perhaps … a rare few perhaps! An emergent consciousness that encompasses both the previously unconscious and conscious minds in integration becomes the process. In this way, Ancient Wisdoms, that are far advanced in comparison to anything in the technologically advanced societies today, are achieved and utilized. There exist great ramparts of resistance to access of these truths… and they are cast all about as challenges to the human psyche.
