The Nature and Origin of Beliefs The key to understanding the nature of beliefs is to avoid the misconception that beliefs constitute a set of objective truths. Instead, we can define beliefs as what we assume to be true for ourselves at any given time. They are not truths but merely mental constructions that guide our decisions and behaviours. They are nothing more than subjective ideas about what is true or not true. They develop through exposure to a variety of experiences, with many stemming from our parents, culture, and environment. We may even have many beliefs of which we are not even consciously aware that impact what we think is or is not possible. In our world, we have confused the understanding of truth with that of relativism, which assumes that for something to exist it must have a relationship to something else. We find that in almost all cases the human ego takes relative truth, which is subject to its own belief structure and assumes it to be absolute. If we take careful inventory of our beliefs we will discover that just about everything is relative to some prior experience or knowledge. That is why no two people can or will ever have exactly the same belief about a particular subject, even though in conversation it may appear so. Therefore, we dont need to hang onto any particular belief because we think it is truth. In any case, beliefs tend to change by themselves as does our life experience. So let us filter our beliefs through this understanding, and then we will be better equipped to embrace those beliefs that bring joy and stop giving energy to those that dont. In the end it is all arbitrary personal preference, so why not choose the beliefs that create a more pleasing and joyous reality. Love and Blessings Angelica & Terence Atman
