The Paderewski piano on which I gave a concert at the piano museum - TopicsExpress

The Paderewski piano on which I gave a concert at the piano museum in Waiheke Island off Auckland, NZ, August 10. Here is Vivienne Sands review of my Taupo concert, August 17: TRIUMPH IN TAUPO. Ramis Sunday concert marked a triumphant return to Taupo where he has dazzled audiences on six previous occasions. The opening Toccata, Adagio and Fugue BWV 564 by Bach/Busoni recreated the tones of a majestic pipe organ with thunderous pedal notes, and distinct timbres of selected organ stops. It was, as one gentleman was heard to exclaim immediately afterwards, fantastic! Beethovens op. 57 Sonata, Appassionata, in F minor proved a feat of physical and mental power, with refreshingly sustained momentum throughout the often lethargically performed slow movement. Ramis Andante reading of the theme and variations travelled serenely to the brink of the precipice marking the ons of the tumultuous Finale. Another triumph! A sympathetic interpretation of the Canzonetta and Toccata from op. 34 by the renowned Israeli composer Ben-Haim was followed by Ramis own Rhapsody in Blue and White (Israels national colours) which cleverly combined his countrys national anthem with two traditional tunes. For me, a highlight of the programme was the brilliant and exciting rendition of Chopins Ballade no.1 in G minor, a performance that uncannily captured the contradictions of the composers complex psyche. Rhythmical precision and gusto marked Gershwins 3 Preludes, and the inimitable style of Piazzolla in his Adios Nonino. Rami gave vent to the full range of dynamic bravura in his electrifying final piece - Khachaturians Sabre Dance, and was not permitted to leave without an encore - a ragtime piece, by popular demand. Ramis choice was his Shmateh-Rag, the first, possibly only, Jewish rag, a fine piece, and fitting conclusion to a memorable recital. Vivienne Sands 20/8/14
