The Polar Bears: Every year from late October until mid-to-late November, the southern-most population of polar bears on the planet gathers on the banks of the SW Hudson Bay to await the formation of sea ice and the start of seal hunting season. With a complete dependence on the increasingly unpredictable sea ice patterns, this sub-population in the neighborhood of 1,000 bears is thought by experts to be in its final decades of existence. The migration has become ground zero for climate experts, biologists and other scientists and the surrounding tourism is the bedrock of the local economy in neighboring Churchill, Manitoba.
