"The ROI of Education I have a reactionary rant toward a lunch - TopicsExpress

"The ROI of Education I have a reactionary rant toward a lunch time conversation today: Lunchmate: “So, what’s the ROI of liberal arts education anyway? Sit and read books written by dead people for 4 years doesn’t teach me anything useful. I bet you didn’t even know how to format a spreadsheet out of college, right?” He is right, I didn’t. But here is my take: Truth is, I cannot tell you the ROI of a liberal arts education because the human potential is invaluable and liberal arts education (as is all other forms of education when done right) does not just impart knowledge, it educate one to be a human being. It provides an environment for us to re-imagine the known knowns, to explore the known unknowns, and to encounter the unknown unknowns. It helps us discover our talents and passions and learn the most important skill of all: to think independently. Such that we are equipped to go realize our various missions on this planet. It teaches us that all disciplines are connected and that the human potential is limitless. It awakens our humanity so we can do something useful for someone other than ourselves. It inspires our imagination so that we can not just learn how to format a spreadsheet on our own but also invent new ways to process data At the same time, it murders our ego, opens our minds and make room for humility. So that we would not ask questions such as: “what is the value of education?” It teachers us the fragile-ness of our existence and the vastness of our ignorance so that we have no choice but to appreciate the permanence of wisdom and the impermanence of our being. So that we can see through the alluring disguise of wealth, material, fame, youth, beauty, power and all other less consequential entities and devote energy to self actualization and to something that matters to humanity and the universe. That, my fellow human being, is the value and purpose of a liberal arts education. And of Education. period." Thank you, Mingzhu He. curiously.us/the-roi-of-education/
