The Rise & Fall of Barnburgh Main Colliery - LEV 126 This is a poem about our colliery, workplace of so many in its time Wheels still turning in my head, from my years down Barnburgh mine Those men and the boys that it led, to grow in the blink of an eye We lived for each other yet we knew, together we could certainly die The shafts were sunk in 1911, continued down to the depths of 1915 Amidst war and a diminishing population, coal was dug from every seam Manvers Main Colliery Company, the owners who’s history began The pit better known to us locals, as the infamous ‘Cat & Man’ Disasters have occurred, covered mourners in solemn plight Ten miners lost their lives, for them no return to the light The Barnsley & Swallow Wood, Meltonfield Newhill plus Parkgate All were rocked by explosions, the day the earth trembled its fate Men hewed ingrained with coal, from years of toil, grime and dust Yet life was hard and bitter, but your workmates you could trust The roof gave way or floor rose, he’d stand by you to make it good Broken pit props he could hold, his strength stronger than wood ‘Tricians to fitters and facemen, chock doctors pan turners onsetter Families who worked together, all brothers you’d get no better The strike put strain on us all, “The Strong Stood Firm” they say In 1989 British Coal tolled the bell, 25 years ago to the day Check numbers from the time ‘ole, Trev would see to your pay Jackie lamplugh 1831 3525 3602, brothers Jimmy & John Winnin Rae F.
