The Secret Ingredient “Mom, is dinner ready yet?” “Why don’t you play in your room first?” Again. “Mom, is dinner ready yet?” “You already asked that, sonny. And I barely just started five minutes ago,” Shouting this time. “Mom!” “Not yet, darling.” Begging. “Mom, I’m starving.” “Almost finished, honey.” The boy went to the kitchen for the second time and saw tears on his mother’s face. “Mom.” “Here, darling. It’s your favourite.” She served a bowl of porridge to her son. Trying her best to feed him even when there was nothing left for her to eat. Though by just looking at her boy eating, she felt full herself. The boy stared at the porridge and then at his mother. “Why are you crying, mother?” Taken aback by her son’s question, she wiped her tears and smiled to him. “It’s because of a secret ingredient,” she told him. Tilting his head, he asked curiously, “What secret ingredient?” The mother smiled and patted his head. “One day, you’ll know. Eat your porridge while it’s still hot.” Another tear ran down the mother’s face. The boy obeyed his mother and ate the porridge silently. After he finished, he handed the empty bowl to his mother. Then a realization hit him. His mother hadn’t eaten anything. He searched for the pot that his mother used to cook. It was already in the sink. The boy started to cry silently. “Why are you crying, darling?” the mother asked, surprised. “Did the porridge taste bad?” The boy shook his head. “No. I think it’s because of the secret ingredient too.” As soon as she heard his answer, she burst into tears and embraced her son. “I love you, mother,” the little boy muttered under his breath. “I love you too.” Our kids need love. They need to feel loved. We need to feel love. Abuse and neglect are NOT love. Even if all you can give is porridge. .. they know the love. It is so much better then allowing them to see, or experience abuse. Please be their hero today. Let them know they loved. -Elizabeth
