The Time Is Short For many years I was a clock watcher. I was constantly glancing at my wristwatch, or the nearest clock. It wasnt that I was in any particular hurry, most of the time, or that I couldnt wait to get off work or out of church. It was a habit fueled by anxiety, based in my need to control the ebb and flow of my daily life. When I went somewhere, I always had to be early, or I would become angry and frustrated. That created problems often with my wife and daughter, who have a much more relaxed attitude toward schedules and deadlines. I finally stopped wearing a watch, because I no longer have such a strong urge to know what the current time might be. I must confess to checking my smart phone now and again, but not with the same degree of diligence. That being said, there is still a degree of urgency when time to get something important done grows short. We may have to drop or postpone things that are of a lower priority. Thats true in the times we live in, because time is growing short for the entire world: 1 Corinthians 7:29 But this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none, 30 those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, 31 and those who use this world as not misusing it. For the form of this world is passing away. You may point out that Paul wrote this almost 2,000 years ago, and we still have not reached the end of the world. The difference now is that the prophecies the Word gives of the last days have either already been fulfilled, or are being rapidly realized. Ours is a unique time in the history of creation, and many followers of Yeshua, including me, believe that the time is, indeed, very short. Yahweh is doing a quick work in many lives, and the process of shaking everything loose that is not of Him is well under way. If we believe thats true, what should our response be? Paul did not intend for us to leave our spouses, or to ignore our emotions. What he is saying is that we should not focus on the concerns of everyday life, and the concerns of the world, but on our relationship with God. This should always be our top priority, but even more so now. That is true not only because He is looking for a spotless bride, but because He does not want anyone to perish. We are the instruments He has chosen to bring the Good News of reconciliation to the lost. Dont be anxious about what is coming, but make the best possible use of the time that remains for us. Ephesians 5:15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
