The Tuna Capital of the Philippines The Philippines’ southernmost city is known as the General Santos City mostly abbreviated as GenSan. It is a greatly developed city being classified as one of the first class in the country. The city is surrounded by other eminent ones such as Alabel, Maasim and municipalities of the Province of Sarangani specifically that of Polomolok and Malungon. In 1939 62 settlers were relocated by General Paulino Santos from Luzon to Sarangani. The settlers travelled using the "Basilan" steam ship owned by Compania Maritima. The mission was organized then President Manuel Quezon under the Commonwealth Government. The Christian settlers with a number of 62 were mostly graduates of agriculture and trade and were the first batch who settled into the city of Gen San with a mission. Their mission was to cultivate the city’s land industriously. After this batch there came thousands more coming from both Luzon and Visayas. The industry of GenSan is known for its abundance in exports of exotic fruits and vegetables. This is because of its rich soil and healthily allotted rainfalls all year. Its soil is known to produce valuable crops like rice, banana, coconut, pineapple and corn. Because of this the city is also one of the top producers of livestock with good quality like poultry, cattle and hogs. But what General Santos is greatly known for is its being the largest yearly producer of tuna in the country. Even in the early years in 1970 the city has already been tagged as the Tuna Capital of Philippines because of its sashimi tunas. Aside from that GenSan is also the 2nd largest catcher of fish daily in the Philippines. It comes after Navotas City which has the most catch. The locals of Gensan also boasts of the freshness of its fishes and seafoods compared to other cities. The Tuna Capital owns a very large fishing industry. It reaches to a maximum of 750 metric tons of daily capacity. It also employs an estimate of 8,000 workers. The industry is so big that its industry has seven main plants that process tuna in Philippines. Its fishports use facilities that are modern and always updated. It is also a basic procedure for the leaders of the fishing industry to see to it that these industries are complying with the international standards handling a fish catch. General Santos city play a vital role in the region of SOCCSKSARGEN as it is the Philippine’s lead producer of commodities in terms of exports. It owes its name in commerce and trade to it location which is a strategic one and also to its support facilities. The city has other attractions which makes it a suitable place for tourists to visit sometimes. Like any other major cities in the Philippines it also celebrates festivities such as the "Kalilangan" festival held every February of the year. It is a celebration of social gathering between people of different traditions, commerce and trade. The city is also proud to present the Klaja Ecopark which is a home for caves and waterfalls.
