The U.S. Senate is expected to consider a proposal in the near future that may interfere with the ability of a veterinarian to prescribe compounded medications for dogs, cats and horses. These are customized medications that can make all the difference in the world when these animals have a health issue. Provisions under consideration may limit the bulk ingredients that can be used in compounded medications to treat dogs, cats and horses to a positive list developed by the FDA. There are no similar restrictions for elephants, giraffes, hamsters, other minor species—or humans! This may mean the elimination of important drug therapies that dogs, cats and horses depend on. This proposal was temporarily shelved in late May when the Senate Committee approved a bill, S.959, to which proponents were hoping to attach it. But there is a possibility that this provision may be put back in when S.959 is debated on the Senate floor. We need to let our voices be heard and let Congress know what we think of these provisions. Too much is at stake to stand on the sidelines. Please take action today to let Congress know that compounded medications matter to you.
