The Wise King In a far, far away land, there was a beautiful kingdom with a unique rule. According to this rule, anyone can become the king, with all rights to govern the country for five full years. But, after that he will be detained, his body will be tied and he will be thrown away to a remote island where the jungle is thick and there are no humans, but plenty of wild animals. To be king was the dream of most men. One by one, people came, and became king. The first man said OK, I am ready to be the king. And he became a king for five years. But in his five years, he enjoyed his position. He threw big parties, went to many beautiful places, married many women, collected many luxurious things and did all the other things that pleased him Those were all he did. Until one day the time came for his rule to end. One morning when the king woke up, suddenly came the strong soldiers to the palace and said, We come here under the order of the constitution. You became a king for five years. And now the time has come when we should seize you and take you to the remote island. The king was not very surprised, because he knew that the time would come (just like we know our time will come, as well). He just felt that the time passed by so quickly. He had enjoyed himself during the past five years, and now he had to leave all the things that had made him happy, and undergo living in the very dangerous island. He was very scared but could do nothing and had to accept his destiny with tears in his eyes. And when they got there, the soldiers put the dethroned king in the jungle and left him alone. They did not know and did not care what would happen to him. All they heard when they left the island was just the voices of wild animals and the long screeaam of the former king. And then----- silence again. In the meantime, the constitution was still effective at the kingdom. And then came a second king. Time showed that he too behaved similarly like the first king. He used his time to enjoy an extravagant life, and when his five years were over, the soldiers took him too and brought him to the island. He cried on the day he was thrown away to the remote island, and the voice of wild animals mixed with his scream was heard after he was left alone. Many others came forward, became kings, but they behaved in the same way, and they too shared the same fate. Each one of them just copied their predecessors story. Laughter in the beginning, and crying in the end. One day, a young man came and declared his wish: I want to be the king. By the constitution, he too was granted his wish. He would be the king for five years before being thrown away to the island. But,whereas other kings followed their passion for having fun after being inaugurated, he did not. He realized that his time was only five years. Even if he had a happy life during that time, his life as a king would come to an end. So, the king was always seen to be thinking. And not very long after that, he made a suprising decision. I will not live an extravagant live, but I will use all my power, even if I have to suffer, so as to prepare for my life on the remote island. In the first year, he sent troops, veterinarians, and animal trainers to the dangerous island. The mission was to control the population of wild animals there or domesticate them for good use. The mission was so huge that it consumed a lot of the country’s resources. But it was the king’s decision. He had calculated it, and he was ready to make sacrifices. Whereas all things were used by previous kings to have fun, now these very things were used by the new king in this mission. He really dedicated his energy to the mission. The mission was a huge success. In the second year, he sent a lot of farmers to the island to start cultivating a wide expanse of land with rice and other crops. In the third year, he built a lot of facilities on the island, from electriciity to hospital. In the fourth year, he sent a lot of educated people like engineers, accountants, and many others to develop and provide the basic amenities of life on the island. And in the fifth year, he sent his family, friends, relatives and well-wishers to live on the island. And finally the time came when he too, as the reigning king, had to be thrown away to that very island. During the 5 years of his reign, the king was immersed in thoughts and hard work, and had no time for pleasure, not even for a smile. But, on the morning of the big day, the king smiled his widest smile ever in five years. When many strong soldiers caught and roped him, his smile grew even wider. And finally he laughed a great laugh when the soldiers threw him away on the island. Why shouldn’t he laugh? If the previous kings found thick jungle and so many wild animals when they were thrown away, the last king found many exciting things needed to live comfortably. His family and friends were there to welcome him. They cheered: Long live the wise king, long live the wise king! And the wise king lived happily onwards, and thereafter. What is the lesson here for all of us? Actually, everyone of us is like the king. We are given time to live in this world and do whatever we want. But after the time ends, we will be detained (by the Angel of death), and roped (with shroud), then finally thrown away to the very dangerous place (grave, with its snakes, scorpions and torturer angles) So many people are tricked by their life in this world. All they do in this world is grab hold of the fun and frolic, and they forget that the time will come when they will have to face a very different life. And when it happens, they are unprepared. The outcome: a life of torture forever. But not so with those who take and act upon Allah’s Guidance, they live in this world just to prepare for their life in the hereafter, just like the wise king. These people will face death with a smile, because they would have prepared a very good life in paradise. And the ending for these people is, they live in true happiness forever. When the earth is ground to powder. And your Lord comes with the angels in rows. And Hell is brought nigh that Day. On that Day, will man remember, but how will that remembrance avail him? He will say: Alas! If only I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life! On that Day, none will punish as He will Punish. And none will bind as He will Bind..." Al Qur’an
