The bats werent the only critters feeling the heat last week. Large flocks of corellas, galahs and cockatoos were also hitting the creek to cool down in Numurkah. They were mainly drinking off the fallen trees on the edge of the creek but where I was observing the bats, right on the edge of their camp, in the middle of the creek there were a few very spindly looking snags sticking out of the water. When one bird landed on one, others realised this may have been a good way to jump the queue to get a good vantage point to drink. The photo series show how one bird would get hounded with the hope to push him off so another could take his place. Luckily for me, there happened to be a nice shaft of natural sunlight from the falling sun hitting the water and snags in just the right place because the light was fading fast :) There is a mixture of Long billed and Little Corellas in these photos and these two birds readily mix in large flocks together all the time. If you look closely you can see the difference in the beak, the Long billed obviously having a much longer, narrower bill. These shots were all taken the same evening as the previous bat shots while keeping an eye on the bats in the heat.
