The conversation started very simply with, “Would you be able to make a copy of these papers? And may I have an envelope?” Curt was assembling paperwork to finalize a workers’ comp settlement. Workplace injuries are not uncommon among the men who come to St. John Center for services. In Curt’s case, he fell 30 feet, shattering bones in his forearm, damaging his skull, and dislocating his hip. Through tears, he went on to detail his losses, from his health to his housing to his dignity. “I worked for 33 years straight. I was raised that way and it hurts to be in this situation.” He described his loneliness, saying, “You start to wonder if anyone will even notice if you die out here.” He is on the right path, though, and will likely have housing within four weeks. Today, carefully putting his documents together, he smiled and said, “Wow, this is a miracle. I needed help to get this in order. Thank you!” An envelope and postage a miracle? It is certainly a matter of perspective.
