The death of Robin Williams is a tragic loss that has been flooding the internet - more than any other celebrity death I have ever noticed. I have wondered why that is. Death is solemn , of course, and suicide is horrible and sad, but this seems to have reached people at a personal level. The reason is, of course, that we saw something in his performances that touched us. That reached through the illusion of film and gave us a sense that we knew the man on the screen. There was something very raw about the way Williams portrayed his characters. The sadness he could command in his eyes and the way that a man known for talking fast could pick the right moment to hesitate. He was much more than a funny man, in fact to me it was always his more serious roles that captured me the most. His passing is difficult to think about, but his life meant something to a lot of people. He left a great deal of cinema behind and (aside from a few deft turns at creepy villains) the bulk of it is inspiring. This Movie Club is going to interrupt the planned schedule and view one of Robin Williams performances. Adam suggested Awakenings. Awakenings is a true and fascinating story based on the writings of renown neurologist Oliver Sacks. The movie is available to stream on Prime for $2.99. Also on youtube for the same price. We will open discussion for Awakenings on Monday morning.
