The decision to impose a no-fly zone over Syria is “an act of aggression” that would only escalate the ongoing conflict in the Middle Eastern country, says American analyst James Petras. “The decision to use NATO warplanes to annex the air space over Syria is clearly an act of colonial aggression by any measure,” Petras told Press TV’s U.S. Desk on Sunday. It is an infringement on “the international right of a country to exercise sovereignty,” he said. “Engaging in this action will certainly widen the war in the Middle East as Syrians will defend their airspace and that will bring Russia into the picture and also Iran,” the analyst noted. “We can see this aggression as part of a general scheme to re-colonize the Middle East, to fragment Syria into competing ethnic and religious groups as part of a general strategy to isolate; first, Hezbollah from its role as a coalition partner in Lebanon and then to move on to the major object of this aggression which is to attack Iran.” Damascus has repeatedly said that the conflict is being orchestrated from outside the country with militants coming from at least 29 different nations fighting against the government. Petras also said that “the armed mercenaries” who are engaged in the Syrian conflict are “instruments of foreign power.” U.S. President Barack Obama plans to provide arms to foreign-backed militants fighting the Syrian government. Officials say that Washington is also planning for a possible no-fly zone inside Syria. The U.S. has dispatched F-16 fighter jets and Patriot missiles to Jordan, a neighbor of Syria, for a joint military exercise. 5,000 U.S. personnel are participating in the 12-day maneuver. AT/HJ
