The end of my Grinchmas challenge and I remarkably got through these 28days unscathed. I spent yesterday reviewing my posts over the last month and have come to these conclusions. My Grinchdom comes from seeing people keep talking about the “human spirit” as being innately good and what many would consider the “essence of Christmas”. I find that the human spirit is quite often narcissistic and self serving, spending large amounts of money and time “on others” in some vain attempt to make up for a year of ignoring them. We all push agendas, like that of a madman in a chocolate cafe, and the yearly timing of this is why we have so many emergency department call outs during this period of time. On the other side of the coin, especially when someone pushes such agendas, we see society come together and promote the ideals we praise in humanity. Christmas then represents a time for us to remember and make time for family and friends. It is a last breath at the end of the year, and also a last push to get everything done and see everyone before the new year. It is a juxtaposition of stressful expectation and joyous revelry. For us this year it has meant new beginnings, a celebration of family and the friends who we include as family, and, for me personally, putting aside my Grinch and taking the time to notice the gifts in life that become more obvious at this time of year. With all my Grinch ways put aside, (things like the over commercialisation of the holiday, calling Christmas songs “carols”, celebrating the birth of Christ at the wrong time of the year, Christmassy people), it comes down to this. Christmas is about family, friends, and faith. Regardless of beliefs we all put faith in something, and this time of the year is when we confirm and solidify that.
