The first UNC graduation I attended was in May 2001. Despite protests, Stuart Scott was the commencement speaker. Although Ive never been a big sports fan or viewer of ESPN, I was more delighted for the day than I can communicate for many reasons - one of them being that the speaker was a black male journalist named Scott who pledged Alpha Phi Alpha at UNC. There was a lot to be excited about. But beyond the literal similarities, like my brothers Jonathan Wall and Clinton Smith have shared - I saw myself in him or at least what I could be if I decided to be ME. Here are some of the words he shared with us: The best thing about diversity, thinking about it, trying to learn from it, trying to grow from it, understanding how so many different people come together to create this world that you are about to walk head first into. You will make a difference, not in that Hallmark card way of making a difference but in the real way. With your kids or with somebody else’s kids. Some clichés are true. Just as your parents and uncles and aunts raised you to shape the world, and you are about to, you will help raise the next generation to take over where you left off. Dying at 49, Scott reminds us that life is short and time is precious. What are you doing with your days here? unc.edu/news/archives/may01/commdayad052001.htm
